UNTITLED

[DARK GREEN]

Created as part of DirtyFeet’s Choreographic Lab Program, this project began with ideas about control and autonomy in choreographic processes.

We explored a spectrum from the constriction of rigorously formed hyper-specific movement, to the sensation of freedom working in looser image-based scores. We also worked with a spectrum of highly agitated urgency (not waving- drowning!) through to a deeply relaxed soft-focused state.

In exploring these tones, we found that they have a real kinaesthetic impact. The tone of the performers- physical tone of the body and the tone of their actions- changes the tone of the room. In turn the audience physically experiences the same tone in their own body. When the performers physically signal towards you with a sense of urgency, your body tenses, you pay attention, your focus sharpens, you lean in. As the tone softens and the pressure eases off and you see the performers bodies relax and soften, your body will also calm and settle, your breathing changes, your eyes soften.
