This project incorporated experimentation with large scale design elements drawing inspiration from the work of Richard Serra.

A network of rope crossing the space at a height of around 2.5 metres was developed in response to the architecture of the room, sensitively utilising the exposed framework of the building. Lengths of heavy knit fabric were suspended along these rope lines to form hanging wall like structures, enclosing parts of the space and creating different sectioned areas. Some of these spaces became interiors and others exteriors, some centred and some on the edges.

The choreographic exploration reflected these spaces with a range of scales from the intimate to the expansive. We explored the tactile qualities of these barriers, that seem an overpowering presence in the space but are also easily lifted or drawn back, revealing their softness and responsiveness.
