SHIFTING
SHIFTING was a short work for the FLING Company, created for the Australian Youth Dance Festival showcase in Melbourne in 2019, and later presented in Bega as part of Parklight Festival.
Shifting was made as a response to the context of creating work for a traditional frontal rectangular stage and a group showcase format, and asking the question how can we work with that framework, while also embracing the things that make FLING and our work unique?
The result combined short explosive scores in structured rhythms, large dynamic travelling phrases and moments pulling back to small textures, expanding and contracting and reorganising the audiences attention and perception of space. Shifting highlighted the individuality of the performers and also celebrated their capacity to work together as a company.
